COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -South Carolina star linebacker Jasper Brinkley will miss the rest of the season because of a sprained right knee.
Brinkley, the team’s leading tackler a year ago, was hurt during a 28-16 loss at No. 2 LSU and will need surgery, the school said Monday. Spokesman Steve Fink would not say if school planned to apply for a medical redshirt that would give the senior another year of eligibility.
Brinkley had 107 tackles a year ago, more than twice the total of the team’s second-ranked tackler. The 262-pounder from Thomson, Ga., made The Associated Press’ all-Southeastern Conference team a season ago.
Brinkley is the second defensive starter lost for the year in the past two games. Lineman Nathan Pepper injured his left knee on an interception return for a touchdown in a victory over South Carolina State.
No. 16 South Carolina (3-1) is home against Mississippi State (3-1) on Saturday.
