NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Southern Connecticut State sophomore tailback Jerom Freeman rushed for an NCAA Division II record 418 yards in the Owls’ 56-28 victory over Bryant on Friday night.
Freeman, who carried the ball 34 times and tied the school record with five touchdowns, surpassed the old Division II mark of 410 yards, set by Andrew Terry of Ferris State on Oct. 2, 2004. The NCAA all-division record is 441 yards, set by Dante Brown of Division III Marietta, who did it against Baldwin-Wallace in 1996.
It was the fifth straight victory for the Owls (7-3, 6-2 Northeast 10).
Freeman started the scoring 2:43 into the game on a 12-yard run that capped an eight-play, 76-yard drive. He scored on an 48-yard run to make it 14-0.
Bryant (7-2, 7-1) made it 14-7, but Freeman scored on a 70-yard run 12 seconds into the second quarter.
Freeman made it 28-14 when he closed an eight-play, 66-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run. Freeman scored the game’s final touchdown on a 35-yard run with 4:40 left. That run put him over the 400-yard mark. His 8-yard run in the closing seconds gave him the record.
The Division I record is 406 yards by LaDainian Tomlinson of TCU against Texas-El Paso in 1999.
