(STATS) – When NFL scouts studied Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, they were wise to take a long look at his brother Quincy.
The less-heralded Williams brother from Murray State caught the eye of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected the strong safety in the third round of the NFL Draft – with the 98th overall pick – Friday night.
He became the highest draft pick in Murray State history and the first since 2014.
Williams’ brother Quinnen was selected by the New York Jets with the third overall pick in the first round Thursday night. While Quincy’s selection was higher than expected, he rose in the draft buildup, showing great athleticism and testing well. He may fill a hybrid role at the next level.
Williams led Murray State with 111 tackles as a senior, including 9½ for loss, and had two interceptions (one touchdown return) and four pass breakups. The 5-foot-10½, 225-pounder was named to the Ohio Valley Conference first team.
“He was a tackling machine who played an aggressive brand coming off the edge,” said ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. “He’s going to be a guy who’s going to play special teams, he can cover in certain packages. He was an impressive football player at the (FCS) level all year.”
