MADISON, Wis. (AP) -Running back P.J. Hill tied a school record with five touchdowns as No. 7 Wisconsin shook off a first-half scare from The Citadel in a 45-31 victory on Saturday.
The Badgers (3-0) extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 12 games, and never trailed in Saturday’s game. But for a half, it looked like they were in danger of becoming the second Big Ten powerhouse to be upset by a team from what used to be known as Division I-AA this season.
The Citadel (2-1), a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, matched Wisconsin touchdown-for-touchdown and went into halftime tied at 21 with one of the Big Ten’s best.
No. 12 Penn St. 45, Buffalo 24
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – After a sluggish start, a couple lucky bounces propelled No. 12 Penn State to another win.
Anthony Morelli threw for 202 yards and a career-high four touchdowns – two to Andrew Quarless – and Rodney Kinlaw ran for 129 yards and a score as the Nittany Lions defeated Buffalo 45-24 on Saturday.
Fumbles by Austin Scott derailed two early Penn State drives, one on his own 8 that set up a Buffalo field goal to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. But the defense held firm, and a 17-point spurt the last 6:29 of the first half finally allowed Penn State to breathe easy.
No. 23 Georgia 45, Western Carolina 16
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) – Matthew Stafford threw two second-quarter scoring passes and No. 23 Georgia recovered from early offensive malaise.
Stafford lost a fumble on a sack during a sloppy opening quarter which ended 3-3. The Bulldogs pulled away with three second-quarter touchdowns.
Georgia (2-1), held out of the end zone for the first time since 2001 in last week’s 16-12 loss to South Carolina, received a needed confidence boost while giving Western Carolina (0-3) its 12th straight loss.
Stafford was 14-for-20 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Backup Joe Cox added a 34-yard scoring pass and three running backs ran for touchdowns.
No. 18 Virginia Tech 28, Ohio 7
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) – Tyrod Taylor didn’t exactly make No. 18 Virginia Tech’s offense shine, but the freshman quarterback ran for a touchdown and didn’t make any mistakes.
Inserted into the lineup in place of Sean Glennon to energize the running game and help mask the deficiencies in the offensive line, Taylor limited his running and completed 18 of 31 passes for 287 yards. He also scored on a 6-yard draw play with 3:38 left in the third quarter, giving the Hokies (2-1) their first lead at 14-7.
The Bobcats (2-1) gained just 114 yards and got their only points on a 26-yard drive set up by Eddie Royal’s muffed punt in the first half. Ohio spent most of the second half trying to get out of its own territory and only got as far as midfield.
