CHADRON, Neb. (AP) -Now that Chadron State running back Danny Woodhead has broken the NCAA Division II career rushing record, his sights are set on the all-division mark.
Woodhead’s 160 yards on 31 carries in Saturday’s 35-7 win at Colorado Mines pushed his career total to 7,066, bettering the 6,985 by Pittsburg State’s Germaine Race (2003-06).
“It’s pretty cool, but it’s not something I knew until I was on the bus,” Woodhead said Sunday. “As of now, things are going great. I can’t complain how we’re doing as a team, and I feel better running the ball this year.”
Woodhead, the 2006 Harlon Hill Trophy winner as Division II’s top player, is averaging 175.2 yards through four games. He needs 288 yards to break the NCAA all-division record of 7,353 by Grove City (Pa.) College’s R.J. Bowers (1997-2000).
Woodhead, who has four 300-yard games in his career, plays two of his next three games at home. The unbeaten Eagles host New Mexico Highlands for homecoming this week, then travel to Western New Mexico before returning home to meet Fort Lewis.
The 5-foot-9, 200-pound senior said he has no preference about where he breaks Bowers’ record.
“I’m just playing the game,” Woodhead said. “It would be cool for the fans and everything. That’s not something I’m worried about at all.”
Woodhead also is closing in on the Division II and all-division career all-purpose yards records. With 8,374 yards, Woodhead is 927 shy of the Division II mark of 9,301 by Emporia State’s Brian Shay (1995-98) and 1,138 from the all-division record of 9,512 by Villanova’s Brian Westbrook (1997-98 and 2000-01).
