ATLANTA: The Falcons are coming off their biggest win of the season, a 34-0 thrashing of the Giants at home. The win was coming off an embarrassing 30-20 loss to the Panthers the week before, where people started to question if Atlanta was a real Super Bowl contender. In the win over the Giants, Atlanta held New York to just 256 total yards while forcing three turnovers. On the other side, the Falcons’ offense piled up 394 yards of offense. Quarterback Matt Ryan went 23 of 28 passing for 270 yards and three touchdowns. It was Ryan’s best game of the season in terms of quarterback rating. Ryan has quietly thrown for 4,202 yards this season.
DETROIT: The Lions are currently in a freefall, as they have lost six straight games following a 38-10 loss to the Cardinals last week. This loss was the worst in the six-game losing streak, as Detroit only allowed Arizona to rack up 196 yards of offense, but quarterback Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions, two of which were returned for a touchdown. Stafford has been struggling with his accuracy as of late. He has had at least 18 incompletions in his last four games. One player that hasn’t been struggling for Detroit is receiver Calvin Johnson. He caught 10 passes for 121 yards last week and has 106 receptions for 1,667 yards this season. Johnson is just 181 yards behind Jerry Rice’s single-season record of 1,848 yards. He has had eight-straight games with at least 100 receiving yards.
ODDS: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Falcons are the favorite on the road, as they have odds of -3.5 points at Detroit on Saturday. The over/under total has been set at 50.5 points. Atlanta is 12-2 on the season, 5-2 on the road and 8-5-1 against the spread. The Lions are 4-10 on the season, 2-4 at home and 5-9 against the spread.
TRENDS: The Falcons are 5-2-1 against the spread in their last 8 meetings with the Lions and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 trips to Detroit. These two teams have hit the under in 4 of their last 5 meetings and in their last 5 games played in Detroit. One trend supporting the Lions is that the underdog has covered in 4 of the last 5 games in this series.
