CAROLINA: The Panthers shocked many NFL observers last Sunday when they beat the Falcons 30-20 as a 3-point home underdog. Cam Newton completed 23-of-35 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions while adding 116 yards on nine carries and a 72-yard score. Steve Smith also caught seven passes for 109 yards and DeAngelo Williams caught a 53-yard screen pass for a touchdown. The victory improved the Panthers’ record to 4-9 and 6-7 against the spread. They’re out of the playoff race but Newton and Carolina is playing very well over the past month or so.
SAN DIEGO: The Chargers snapped a four-game losing streak last Sunday when they shocked the Steelers in Pittsburgh with a 34-24 victory. Philip Rivers completed 21-of-41 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns, while Danario Alexander caught seven passes for 88 yards and two scores. Ryan Mathews rushed for 65 yards on 25 carries, Michael Spurlock caught seven passes for 64 yards, and Antonio Gates hauled in three passes for 31 yards. The win improved San Diego’s record to 5-8 overall and 6-7 against the spread while covering as a 7-point underdog. The Chargers are out of the playoff hunt.
ODDS: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Chargers are 3-point favorites versus the Panthers, while the over/under total is currently sitting at 44.5 points. Carolina is 4-9 overall and 2-4 on the road, while San Diego is 5-8 overall and 2-4 at home.
TRENDS: The Panthers are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games in Week 15, 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 6-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record in their last eight games. The Chargers, meanwhile, are 1-4 ATS in their last five games but 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games versus a team with a losing record.
