Buccaneers vs. Jets Odds
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (The Spread) – The New York Jets look to move on past all the preseason drama when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1PM ET on CBS this Sunday.
New York went just 6-10 last season but the Jets were 7-9 against the spread and hit the under in 8 of 16 games. Tampa Bay was 7-9 overall last season while going 9-6-1 against the spread and hitting the over in 8 of 16 games.
Trends show that the Jets have covered the spread in their last four meetings with the Bucs, but New York has failed to cover the spread in its last four home games. Tampa Bay is 18-7-1 against the spread in its last 26 road games.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, the Bucs are the favorite on the road, as they have been given odds of -3 points against the Jets. The over/under total for the contest has been set at 39.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had Tampa Bay favored by just a point. The spread was as low as even during the month before climbing up to 3 points this week. The over/under total opened at 41 points, but the total has been dropping back for a while, settling in at 39.5.
Tampa Bay already had some strong pieces on offense, but the team really addressed its defense, especially its secondary. The Bucs were last in the NFL in passing defense last season, but added cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Dashon Goldson to the team in the offseason. Offensively, the team has skill players like running back Doug Martin and receiver Vincent Jackson, but the success of Tampa Bay’s offense will fall on quarterback Josh Freeman.
The Jets have been a bit of a mess over the last season, but especially this last month. Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter of a preseason game and is now unable to play this Sunday. Now, the team is forced to insert rookie Geno Smith into the starting lineup, probably before he is ready. Smith isn’t likely to help an offense that ranked 30th in the NFL in passing a season ago. On defense, the Jets ranked second in the NFL is fewest passing yards allowed, but the secondary lost Darrelle Revis in the offseason.
In terms of Injuries, Tampa Bay tight end Tom Crabtree is doubtful with an ankle injury while guard Carl Nicks is out with a toe injury. New York receiver Santonio Holmes is questionable with a foot injury.
The Public Bets for this game are currently backing Tampa Bay, as the Buccaneers are getting 87% of the wagers with a point spread of -3 at New York this Sunday.
