49ers cut ties with Smith
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (TheSpread) – After another DUI arrest, the San Francisco 49ers have elected to part ways with former NFL Defensive MVP, Aldon Smith.
Smith was arrested on Thursday night on hit-and-run, driving under the influence and vandalism charges. This marks the third time he has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving since to became part of the NFL in 2011. According to ESPN, 49ers GM Trent Baalke met with Smith on Friday and, when Smith failed to take responsibility for the arrest, the team elected to release him.
“This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues. Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue,” the 49ers said in a statement.
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, the 49ers are currently listed at 40/1 to win the Super Bowl this upcoming season. The Green Bay Packers are 6/1 favorites while the Seattle Seahawks have 13/2 odds.
Smith, a linebacker coming into his fifth season, was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 after picking up a franchise record 19.5 sacks to go with 66 tackles. He has 44 sacks over four seasons, but he hasn’t played a full season since 2012. In 2013 he missed time after getting involved in an accident where he was suspected of drunken driving. In 2014, he was suspended for 9 games due to the previous incident.
