49ers Lock up Jimmy Garoppolo
On Thursday the San Francisco 49ers locked up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term deal. With that, here’s a look at their current Super Bowl odds.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Niners are currently 25/1 to win the 2019 Super Bowl. That’s a drastic change from what their odds were a year ago. At some books, San Francisco had the longest odds to win the 2018 Super Bowl of any team in the field at 200/1.
The Niners signed Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million contract. In terms of average-annual value, it makes Garoppolo the highest-paid player in NFL history. This after only five starts with the 49ers. (Granted, he went 5-0 in those starts.) Of course, once Kirk Cousins signs his free agent contract he will likely surpass the money that Garoppolo is making.
Going on 27, Garoppolo has made only seven career starts but won all of them between New England and San Francisco. He completed 67.4 percent of his 178 pass attempts while averaging 8.8 yards per attempt. While the money is eye-popping, the 49ers needed to ensure that the man they traded for a year ago would be around a long time. Now they have their franchise quarterback in place and can start building around him.
Meanwhile, the Patriots remain Super Bowl favorites at 6/1. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles are 10/1, as are the Steelers. The Packers and Vikings are 12/1, respectively, while the Falcons and Saints are 20/1, respectively. The Rams are 22/1.
