Bears bench Cutler, Clausen to start
CHICAGO, IL (TheSpread) – The Chicago Bears are in need of a spark and they believe Jay Cutler is not the one to provide it, as they benched him for Sunday’s game vs. the Detroit Lions.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the news on Wednesday night that the Bears would be benching Cutler for this week. In his place, the Bears will start Jimmy Clausen. Clausen has thrown just nine passes this season, completing three of them for 42 yards.
According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Detroit is favored by 7 points on the road against the Bears this Sunday. The odds may not yet be reflective of the change at quarterback. Detroit needs a win to secure a playoff spot.
The Bears are just 5-9 on the season and Cutler is getting a good portion of the blame for that, despite having a defense that is allowing 382.4 yards per game. Cutler has thrown for 3,640 yards and 28 touchdowns this season, but also has 18 interceptions and a number of fumbles. He is 347 of 525 passing but has had leadership questions for many seasons.
