Bills 35/1 to win 2016 Super Bowl as questions remain at quarterback

GM: Bills almost in “QB purgatory”

BUFFALO, NY (The Spread) – With questions remaining at the quarterback position, the Bills remain long shots to win the 2016 Super Bowl.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Bills are 35/1 to win the Super Bowl this season. They’re also 18/1 to win the AFC Conference Championship and 4/1 to win the AFC East Division, behind the Patriots (2/3) and Dolphins (16/5).

Buffalo currently has a three-man competition taking place at the quarterback position in training camp. Veteran Matt Cassel, former Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor, and 2013 first-round pick EJ Manuel continue to battle for starting snaps at the position. As of this writing, none of those three players has grabbed hold of a lead.

On Wednesday, Bills GM Doug Whaley made headlines when he told WGR Sportsradio 550 in Buffalo that the team was “almost in quarterback purgatory.”

“Another thing that we told every (head coaching) candidate (during the interview process) is we’re almost in quarterback purgatory,” Whaley said. “We’re good enough that we’re not going to have the first or second pick. We hope we’re not in that position. Hopefully we’re drafting now in the teens and 20s and 30s. So you’re not going to get the top college quarterbacks who are coming out. Franchise quarterbacks hitting the free agent market? Name them, unless they have an injury.

“So it’s going to be on our scouting staff to find a guy in the low first, second or third round. We accept that challenge and it’s where we are and it’s been good that we have enough talent around that we’re in that situation, but there’s no easy answer.”
