ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Buccaneers and WR Mike Evans could not reach an agreement on a contract extension and the veteran will explore free agency following the 2023 season. Saturday’s deadline was self-imposed by Evans, who will now play the 2023 season on the final year of his contract. Considering the relative rebuild the Buccaneers are undergoing following the retirement of Tom Brady, it could make sense for the team to explore the trade market for the veteran wide receiver during the season. Evans wanted to cut off contract negotiations during the year as he hunts for his 10th consecutive 1,000-yard season.

Vikings EDGE Marcus Davenport (ankle) is questionable for Week 1 against the Bucs. Davenport was added to the injury list on Friday, so it looks like he suffered the ankle injury late in practice on Thursday or sometime during the final session of the week. Either way, it’s not a great sign for his Week 1 availability. Davenport was brought into Minnesota on a one-year, $13 million contract this offseason.

Bucs vs. Vikings Prediction:
Give me the points. For the record, I think the Bucs are about to have a miserable season. There’s a reason why Baker Mayfield is now on his fourth team despite being the No. 1 overall selection just five seasons ago: He’s not that good. He can’t see the entire field because of his size, he’s not overly athletic and he crumbles when the game is on the line. That said, thanks to Mike Evans (who likely is playing his final season for Tampa Bay), Chris Godwin and Rachaad White, the Bucs do have some talent around Baker on offense. Defensively, they still have Super Bowl holdovers Devin White, Lavonte David, Shaq Barett and Vita Vea among others. As for the Vikings, they’re going to score at will at times (even without Dalvin Cook), but can they stop anyone defensively? That was a problem all last season, as was playing in a ton of one-score games.
