Eagles bring in Darius Slay

The Philadelphia Eagles addressed a need in the secondary on Thursday morning by trading for Darius Slay. How does it impact their Super Bowl odds?

According to oddsmakers, the Eagles are currently listed with 18/1 odds to win the Super Bowl next season. Kansas City is the favorite to repeat, as the Chiefs are listed with 5/1 odds while the Ravens have 13/2 odds and the 49ers are listed at 12/1. Philadelphia is listed at 9/1 to win the NFC Championship, which ranks fifth in the conference odds right now.

The Eagles agreed to trade for Darius Slay while sending a third and a fifth round pick to the Detroit Lions on Thursday. Philly and Slay also agreed to a 3-year, $50 million extension to his current contract to give the veteran CB the money he was looking for that led to a rift with the Lions. The Eagles were players in the market for Byron Jones in free agency, but he opted to go to Miami. That forced their hand to go after Slay.

Slay was a second-round pick by the Lions in the 2013 NFL Draft. Over his seven seasons with Detroit, Slay had 19 interceptions and 103 pass deflections. His top season was in 2017, when he had a career-high eight interceptions and 26 pass deflections. Slay has picked up at least two interceptions in every season since 2014.

Philadelphia gave up 331.7 passing yards per game last season while amassing 11 interceptions as a team and 82 pass deflections. The Eagles are coming off a 9-7 record last season that won them the NFC East. They lost to the Seattle Seahawks during Wild Card weekend, 17-9.
