Super Bowl LII Line Drops Again

The point spread for Super Bowl LII has once again dropped. Here’s the latest line for Sunday’s matchup between the Eagles and Patriots.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Patriots are now 4.5-point favorites to beat the Eagles on Super Bowl Sunday. New England opened as a 6-point favorite but the line immediately dropped to 5.5 and within 42 hours the spread went to 5. Now six days before the big game, the line has dropped again.

Why is the spread dropping? Las Vegas oddsmakers must be receiving heavy wagers on Philadelphia although the action online doesn’t support the line movement. As of this writing, 57% of betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Eagles but 51% of the money wagered is on the Patriots. Even though the majority of the betting tickets are on Philadelphia there would have to be sharp action on the Eagles too for the line to drop as much as it has.

The biggest injury to note is Rob Gronkowski, who practiced again on Sunday. He hasn’t officially been cleared for full contact yet but still has a week to make it through the concussion protocol. It’s highly likely he plays on Sunday and perhaps that will impact the betting line as well.

The underdog is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings between these two teams while the over has cashed in four of the last five meetings overall. The Eagles are also 11-4 against the number in their last 15 games overall while the Patriots is 36-16-2 against the spread in the last 54 games overall.
