Panthers’ spread taken off the board
CHARLOTTE, NC (The Spread) – Following Tuesday’s car accident involving quarterback Cam Newton, oddsmakers have removed the spread for Sunday’s Panthers’ game.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Newton was involved in a car crash in North Carolina earlier Tuesday afternoon. An update noted that Newton was “conscious and smiling” following the accident and that he did not want to be taken to the hospital. As of this writing, the quarterback had been diagnosed with two transverse process fractures in his lower back, but “no further internal injuries.”
The Panthers opened as 5.5-point favorites for their game Sunday against the Buccaneers but the line was quickly bet up to 6 at most sports books. Since Newton’s accident, however, most Vegas sports books have taken the spread off the board while others dropped the spread to Carolina -3.5.
It’s unclear if Newton will play in Week 15 but his injury is similar to the one that Cowboys’ signal-caller Tony Romo suffered during a Monday night contest in Week 8. Romo wound up missing one game and was limited in Week 10 so Newton might not be 100-percent again until the end of the regular season.
It’s obviously a situation to monitor but we’re happy to hear that Newton avoided serious injury. Derek Anderson would start on Sunday if Newton weren’t healthy enough to play.
