Bad Beats from NFL & College Football
To kick off the start of Week 10 in college football and week 9 in the NFL, we’re going inside the sportsbook to look at the top three ‘bad beats’ in both gridiron genres.
If you don’t know what a ‘bad beat’ is, it’s one of those heartbreaking ATS losses that take place, either late in a game or comes by just a few points or – even worse – an ATS loss on a wager you should have never made.
Let’s look at the top three bad beats this past weekend in both, college football and the NFL.
Stanford -21 at Oregon State
Final Score: Stanford 14 Oregon State 14
Analysis: The 18th-ranked Stanford Cardinal (6-2) were three-touchdown road favorites to beat the hell out of the one-win Oregon State Beavers and I actually picked the Pac-12 title hopefuls to do just that. Unfortunately, the Cardinals laid a huge egg and never came close to cashing in while hitting the half trailing 7-6 and entering the fourth quarter down 14-9. This ATS outcome is a really bad beat simply because if should have never gone down like this. Stanford sold me and a lot of other bettors out big-time and now I don’t trust them one iota as they visit No. 25 Washington State in Week 10.
Florida State -6 at Boston College
Final Score: Boston College 35 Florida State 3
Analysis: Look, this is a bad beat only if you drank the Kool-Aid and actually thought Florida State would beat Boston College to cover the spread as a road favorite of anywhere between 3.5 and 6 points. We told college football bettors that BC was going to win and they sure did. Florida State never came close to winning or covering the chalk in their totally embarrassing 35-3 road loss. If you took an ATS loss here, this bad beat is on you!
West Virginia +9 vs Oklahoma State
Final Score: Oklahoma State 50 West Virginia 39
Analysis: This is a bad beat only because west Virginia was getting nine points and ended up falling to No. 8 Oklahoma by 11 points. If I remember correctly, I liked west Virginia to cover the chalk at home in this contest, so I’m guilty of suffering a bad beat here as well. Just remember moving forward everyone that the Mountaineers play absolutely no defense whatsoever!

Rice +12 vs. Louisiana Tech
Final Score: Louisiana Tech 42 Rice 28
Miami -21 at North Carolina
Final Score: Miami 24 North Carolina 19
Wisconsin -28.5 at Illinois
Final Score: Wisconsin 24 Illinois 10
NFL Bad Beats
L.A. Chargers +6.5 at New England
Final Score: Patriots 21 Chargers 13
Analysis: This bad beat hurt me if only because I really believed Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers would cover the chalk as a 6.5-point road dog against Tom Brady and the Pats and they fell just short of pulling it off. L.A. hung in there, by taking a 7-0 lead after one quarter before falling behind 15-7 at the half. The Bolts outscored the Pats 6-3 in the final quarter, but alas, it was just not enough to get the ATS cover.
Atlanta -6.5 at NY Jets
Final Score: Falcons 25 Jets 20
Analysis: I’m sorry, but if you backed Atlanta as a 6.5-point road favorite and lost this ATS wager since the Falcons only won by five points, then this bad beat is on you! I warned NFL bettors last week that Atlanta was not only going to fail to cover the chalk in this contest, but that they could lose this contest outright, which they almost did. The Jets lead 17-13 at the half and 17-16 after three quarters before the Falcons outscored New York 9-3 in the final quarter to get the win. Just remember NFL bettors, the Falcons look nothing like the powerful team they did a year ago in winning the NFC with an offense that simply couldn’t be stopped. I say, use caution when betting on Atlanta for the remainder of the regular season.
Seattle -6 vs Houston
Final Score: Seahawks 41 Texans 38
Analysis: I can not tell a lie. This bad beat – and the gifted Deshaun Watson – got me since I picked Seattle to cover the chalk as a 6-point home favorite. I was fairly certain that Seattle’s league-leading scoring defense was going to keep Watson in check while becoming the first team to make him really look like the rookie he is. Clearly I was wrong as Watson tossed four TD passes to keep the Texans in the game throughout what turned out to be arguably the most exciting game of the week. I know one thing, I’m probably not going against Watson and the Texans, like ever again!
