Houston’s TD ruins Redskins MNF bets
The only thing that was standing in the way of Redskins and under bettors cashing on Monday Night Football was four seconds.
After Harrison Butker of the Chiefs made a 43-yard field goal with under 10 seconds remaining on Monday night, bettors that took the underdog Redskins and/or the under were in great shape. All they had to do was to survive the final four seconds and they could cash on Washington (+7) and the under (49.5.).
What happened next was one of the worst beats that you’ll ever see in a football game.
On the final play of the game, Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a screen pass to Jamison Crowder. Crowder ran up field for a few yards and then threw the ball back to Cousins, who couldn’t handle the backwards pass cleanly. If he does, he would have been tackled right there and the game would have been over.
Tight end Jordan Reed then picked up the lose ball and instead of being tackled, he flipped the ball back to Chris Thompson near the 16-yard line. Two Kansas City defenders were in the area and could have tackled Thompson, but he tried to give the ball back to Reed and fumbled himself.
Here’s where disaster struck for Washington bettors.

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston scooped up the ball at the 13-yard line. He shoved Thompson (who was already on the ground) and then made a mad dash to the end zone. Reed was Washington bettors’ last line of defense and when his attempt to strip the ball from Houston’s grasp failed, the linebacker went across the goal line for a touchdown.
Ball game. Final score: Chiefs 29, Redskins 20. It was the only time Washington didn’t cover the point spread all night. That touchdown also pushed the combined score past the number of 48.5, which ruined under bets as well.
There are bad beats every week in college football and the NFL, but this was one of the worst you’ll see…especially considering it was a prime time game.
