Chiefs 2012-13 Season Odds
KANSAS CITY, MO (The Spread) – The AFC West is seemingly up for grabs this season but can Matt Cassel lead the Chiefs to a winning record and perhaps a division title?
Oddsmakers have installed the Chiefs as 50/1 long shots to win the 2013 Super Bowl and 20/1 to win the 2013 AFC Championship. The Chiefs are also 3/1 to win the AFC West Division and have an over/under of 8 for number of total wins during the regular season.
Perhaps the biggest acqusuition Kansas City made this offseason was signing offensive tackle Eric Winston to a contract back in March. The Chiefs also added running back Peyton Hillis to complement Jamaal Charles and their running game, and safety Abram Elam to beef up the depth in their secondary. The loss of cornerback Brandon Carr (Cowboys) will certainly hurt their defensive backfield, however.
In April’s draft the Chiefs selected Memphis nose tackle Dontari Poe in the first-round and Illinois offensive tackle Jeff Allen in the second. In the third they nabbed Oklahoma offensive tackle Donald Stephenson and in the fourth they took Fresno State wide receiver and kick returner Devon Wylie.
While the defense will continue to be stout under new head coach Romeo Crennel, the offense will only go as far as Cassel takes them. Not having Dwayne Bowe (contract dispute) in camp has certainly damped the mood in KC but 2011 first-round pick Jon Baldwin has turned some heads this offseason. If Cassel can play at least as well as he did in 2010 when the Chiefs won the division, they’ll have a shot to take home the AFC West crown. But if he struggles like he did last year then KC could be looking for a new quarterback in 2013.
