Dolphins 2012-13 Season Odds
MIAMI, FL (The Spread) – The Miami Dolphins were competitive last year despite missing the playoffs – can they play .500 ball in 2012?
Oddsmakers have installed the Dolphins as 75/1 long shots to win the 2013 Super Bowl and 25/1 to win the 2013 AFC Championship. Miami also has an under/over of 7 games for number of total wins in the 2012 NFL regular season and is 15/1 to win the AFC East Division crown this season.
The Dolphins didn’t make much of a splash in free agency but they did create competition at the quarterback position by signing David Garrard, formerly of the Jaguars. Miami also signed cornerback Richard Marshall and re-signed nose tackle Paul Soliai. Miami also traded receiver Brandon Marshall to the Bears, creating a major need at the position that has yet to be filled.
Miami did make headlines in April’s draft by selecting Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick. New offensive coordinator Mike Sherman coached Tannehill in college and the QB is a nice fit for new head coach Joe Philbin’s West Coast Offense. Whether or not he can beat Garrard and 2011 starter Matt Moore is the question.
In the second round the Dolphins nabbed Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin and in the third they took Miami defensive end Olivier Vernon and Missouri tight end Michael Egnew. In the fourth, the Dolphins got great value in former Miami running back Lamar Miller.
Whether or not the Dolphins compete in 2012 depends on the quarterback position. Reggie Bush provided this team with a spark last season but unless Garrard or Tannehill can overachieve then Miami will have a hard time competing against the Patriots, Jets and even the Bills in the division. Seven games seems high, although this team isn’t in as bad of shape as people believe.
