CAROLINA: The Panthers kept rolling last week with a 17-6 win over the Raiders. It was Carolina’s third straight win and its fourth victory in its last five games. Second-year quarterback Cam Newton completed 18-of-29 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and he also led Carolina in rushing yards with 60 on 12 carries. He also had a score on the ground. Greg Olsen, meanwhile, caught six passes for 53 yards while Steve Smith caught four passes for 45 yards and Newton’s lone touchdown pass. The win improved Carolina’s record to 6-9 and the Panthers are now 8-7 against the spread after covering for the third time in three weeks. The Panthers have also covered the number in four of their last five games.
NEW ORLEANS: After snapping their three-game losing streak two weeks ago in a 41-0 victory over the Bucs, the Saints won again last week with a 34-31 victory over the Cowboys. Drew Brees completed 37-of-53 passes for 446 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, while Mark Ingram rushed for 53 yards on 21 carries and one score. Marques Colston also had a huge day, catching 10 passes for 153 yards and Darren Sproles caught seven passes for 104 yards. Jimmy Graham had seven catches for 88 yards and Pierre Thomas had seven receptions for 61 yards and one score. The win improved New Orleans’ record to 7-8 overall and 8-7 against the spread. They’ve now won two in a row and have covered two straight games after they won outright as a 1-point underdog versus the Cowboys in Week 16.
ODDS: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Saints are 5.5-point favorites versus the Panthers while the over/under total is currently sitting at 54 points. Carolina enters play with a 6-9 overall record and is 3-4 on the road this season, while New Orleans is 7-8 overall and 4-3 at home.
TRENDS: The Panthers are 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 trips to New Orleans and 7-2 ATS in their last nine games versus the Saints overall. The under is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams while the road squad is 17-5 ATS in the last 22 meetings.
