ATLANTA, GA (The Spread) – The Atlanta Falcons find themselves as only slight favorites to beat the red-hot Seattle Seahawks at 1:00PMET today. Let’s take a look at the matchup.
SEATTLE: With their 24-14 victory over the Redskins in the wild card round, the Seahawks have now won six straight games. Russell Wilson completed 15-of-26 passes for 187 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while Marshawn Lynch rushed 20 times for 132 yards with one score. Zach Miller also had an active role in Seattle’s passing game, catching four passes for 48 yards. After covering as a 3-point road favorite last week, the Hawks have now covered the spread in four of their last five games. They’re currently 12-5 overall and 12-5 against the spread and have shown zero signs of slowing down.
ATLANTA: The Falcons won five of their last seven games to finish the 2012 regular season with a 13-3 record to clinch the top seed in the NFC playoffs. They did suffer a bump in the road in Week 17, losing 22-17 to the Bucs in Atlanta. Matt Ryan completed 28-of-44 passes for 238 yards with one touchdown, while Jacquizz Rodgers rushed just five times for 28 yards. Julio Jones added three catches for 56 yards while Roddy White caught five passes for 42 yards. Atlanta covered the spread in three of its last five games and finished 9-6-1 against the number overall. The Falcons are 0-3 under head coach Mike Smith in the postseason, including their 24-2 loss to the Giants in the wild card round last year.
ODDS: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Falcons are 3-point favorites versus the Seahawks while the over/under total is currently sitting at 45.5. Neither the side nor the total has moved much since opening at those same numbers (2.5 and 46).
TRENDS: The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams while the underdog is 5-2 against the spread in the last seven meetings. The Seahawks are also 7-0 against the spread versus a team with a winning record and 5-1 against the number in the last six games overall. The Falcons, meanwhile, are 0-4 against the spread in their last four playoff games.
