NFL Preseason Week 1 8/13/16 Cowboys vs. Rams Picks

Rams draw Cowboys in exhibition opener

Jerry Jones wanted the Rams to return to California as much as anyone. Tonight, the face of Dallas gets to welcome them back in person.

The two teams will kick off Los Angeles’ first pro football game in 22 years at 8 p.m. ET. Online sports book Bovada.lv likes Jeff Fisher’s club as a 5-point favorite. The Cowboys, on the other hand, represent the weekend’s biggest underdog. As for the over/under, it comes in at 35.5.

In January, Jones and other NFL owners voted 30-2 to let the Rams move from St. Louis to City of Angels, where the franchise had played from 1946-1994. Fisher, though, still remains in search of his first winning season at the helm of the organization. He hasn’t posted a campaign of at least 10 victories since 2008 in Tennessee.

The head coach’s squads also have a habit of slogging through exhibition competition. Last year’s group went winless in August, failing to put up a touchdown in its opener against Oakland. This evening can’t unfold in the same way, particularly for Jared Goff’s sake. The No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft needs a solid performance as he begins his quest to unseat Case Keenum for the top quarterbacking spot in Los Angeles.

As for Dallas, most eyes will concentrate on Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers under center. With Kellen Moore having suffered a broken right fibula, the job of Tony Romo’s primary understudy is up for grabs. Romo may not even get a series, so the two professional neophytes stand to see significant action.

Despite the Cowboys’ unknowns at signal-caller, though, we’ll roll with the visitors. The Rams’ O-line picture continues to be a murky one, and Dallas’ depth coming off the edge could wreak some havoc when things inevitably turn sloppy in the second half. Overall, bank on a low-scoring affair.
