Broncos host Rams, QB battles abound
No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff had a pretty nondescript training camp. Judging by the Los Angeles coaching staff’s outline for preseason game No. 3, not much is likely to change tonight.
The rookie quarterback won’t see the field until the third quarter of tonight’s preseason battle with the Broncos. Instead, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion will get the initial opportunities to crack Denver’s steely defense at Mile High Stadium. The host team is considered a 6-point favorite in the eyes of online sports book Bovada.lv. As for the over/under, that number is 42.5.

Gary Kubiak has his own predicament to sort through at signal-caller. Trevor Siemien is scheduled to receive his second straight start, even though last week’s outing against San Francisco did not exactly go swimmingly. The Northwestern alum threw an ugly pick-six, then injured his righty shoulder while attempting to track down Eric Reid on the play. He received limited reps during the week in practice.
Once Siemien finishes his work vs. the Rams’ first-unit defense, the baton goes to veteran Mark Sanchez. First-round selection Paxton Lynch remains in the mix, too, so it’ll be interesting to see who’s capable of potentially carving up the Los Angeles secondary. Janoris Jenkins’ move to the Giants left a rather sizable hole at cornerback that coordinator Gregg Williams has yet to fill.

In the end, look for the Broncos’ superior ground attack to, well, do a superior job of running out the clock. Such a mentality is at the forefront of Kubiak’s game plan on a weekly basis, whereas the Rams are still trying to cultivate that mindset. Denver may have lost a fair amount of talent following that victory over Carolina in January, but it’s still the deeper, smarter squad here.
