According to oddsmakers at GTBets, the Chargers are favored at home, as they have odds of -3 points against the Lions. The over/under total for the game has been set at 46 points. The Chargers have won and covered the spread in four of their last five meetings with the Lions. These two have hit the under in three of their last four meetings.

The Lions were 11-5 last season and earned a playoff spot. Detroit was 8-9 against the spread last season while going 12-5 with the under. Jim Caldwell enters his second season as coach of the Lions looking to lead the team to another playoff run. Detroit lost stud defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in the offseason, but the Lions traded for Haloti Ngata in hopes to stop some of the damage on defense. The Lions are banged up right now with DeAndre Levy, the team’s best linebacker, out for Sunday with a hip injury while third-year guard LaAdrian Waddle is questionable with a knee injury he suffered last season. While the Lions still have Calvin Johnson, the team needs a stronger showing from Matthew Stafford, who had just 22 touchdown passes in 2014.

The Chargers were 9-7 last season and fell just outside the playoffs. San Diego was 7-9 against the spread last season while going 9-7 with the under. Mike McCoy is entering his third season as coach of the Chargers. He has went 9-7 the last two years. The Chargers had some questions coming into the year, but handled the biggest one when it agreed to a new deal with quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers had 4,286 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. Rivers will be without one of his top targets of Antonio Gates, who is suspended for the first four games of the year. The team also drafted running back Melvin Gordon in hopes to improve their run game and balance up the offense.
