NFL Week 16 Picks: Will 49ers vs. Rams go over betting total? 12/24/16

49ers vs. Rams Pick

Will Saturday’s matchup between NFC West rivals the 49ers and Rams go over or under the betting total at 4:25PM ET?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Rams are 4.5-point home favorites over the 49ers after opening as a 3-point favorite earlier this week. The total, meanwhile, opened at 41 and dropped to 39.5.

The 49ers were thumped in Atlanta last Sunday by the Falcons, who routed San Francisco 41-13 as a 13.5-point home favorite. That loss was the Niners’ 13th in a row and it was also the third consecutive week in which the team has failed to cover the spread. At 1-13 on the year, San Francisco is in play for the No. 1 overall draft pick, although winless Cleveland may have that spot on the lockdown.

In their first game following the firing of head coach Jeff Fisher, the Rams were crushed 24-3 as a 15-point road underdog last Thursday night in Seattle. Jared Goff and the offense once again struggled to score, although the Rams had several opportunities to reach the end zone in both halves. The loss was the Rams’ fifth in a row and their 10th overall. At 4-10, Los Angeles is nearly assured a top 10 pick in April’s draft.

OUR PREDICTION: It’s tempting to take the over given how bad these teams have played defensively of late, but I just can’t see the Rams moving the ball against any opponent. Goff is a disaster, Todd Gurley has disappeared in his second season thanks to an awful offensive line, and Tavon Austin is nothing more than a gadget player. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these two teams, is 9-4 in the Rams’ last 13 home games, and is 10-4 in the 49ers’ last 14 divisional games.
