Marshall, Luck among questionable standouts
Entering the third week of the NFL season, we’re already seeing a number of star players fall victim to assorted injuries. Here’s a look at some of those who seem doomed to watch today’s proceedings from the sideline.
Although it’s a generally disgusting situation in the Windy City anyway, the 0-2 Bears probably won’t even be able to deploy their No. 1 quarterback vs. the Cowboys. A right (throwing) thumb issue forced Jay Cutler out of Monday’s 29-14 loss to Philadelphia, and he’s doubtful suit up this evening. Alshon Jeffery, having totaled nine receptions and 201 yards through two contests, also appears iffy due to a sore knee. Given Brian Hoyer’s current status as the top signal-caller in town, the former South Carolina sensation’s value plummets either way.
Speaking individuals under center, Andrew Luck’s prospects of taking on San Diego look superior. The Indianapolis stalwart sat out Wednesday’s practice because of general soreness. His primary target in the passing game, T.Y. Hilton, was limited throughout the week, too. Running mate Donte Montcrief’s extended absence moving forward, however, absolutely mandates Hilton’s presence in the lineup.
Elsewhere on the wideout front, Julio Jones’ bothersome lower leg gets an extra day to recuperate. Expect Falcons coach Dan Quinn to ultimately have his premier threat in fine form for tomorrow’s divisional battle with the Saints. Meanwhile, Brandon Marshall could be an observer when the Jets travel to Kansas City. The perennial Pro Bowler’s currently hindered by a sore knee and various foot injuries.
Defensively, Green Bay’s Clay Matthews will miss his first game since 2013. Tackle Letroy Guion and end/linebacker Datone Jones are doubtful, as well, suggesting the Packers might struggle to upend the Lions. On the AFC side, Denver’s DeMarcus Ware can count on a recovery period of at least four-six weeks after undergoing surgery to fix an ulnar fracture in his right forearm. The Broncos visit Cincinnati at 1 p.m. ET.
