Panthers’ Super Bowl odds drop

CHARLOTTE, NC (The Spread) – The Panthers suffered a significant blow to their offense on Wednesday when receiver Kelvin Benjamin suffered a season-ending injury.

After coach Ron Rivera initially called the injury a sprain, an MRI showed that Benjamin had torn his ACL and would miss the entire season. Second-round pick Devin Funchess will now be thrust into Benjamin’s role in Carolina’s passing game, while Jerricho Cotchery and Corey Brown will see significant snaps as well.

The Panthers also have tight end Greg Olsen, but the loss of Benjamin hurts the team’s production in the red zone. The injury puts more pressure on quarterback Cam Newton and the running game to carry the offense.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Panthers’ 2016 Super Bowl odds went from 45/1 to 50/1 following Benjamin’s injury. It’s a significant drop considering it wasn’t an injury to a quarterback.
