The Athletic’s Jeff Howe and Joseph Person report that QB Baker Mayfield is expected to be named the Panthers’ Week 1 starter. Given that his quarterback competition is Sam Darnold, Mayfield being named the starter can’t be considered a surprise. Darnold finished 35th in EPA per play in 2021, finishing ahead of only Justin Fields and Zach Wilson. Darnold was also highly inaccurate, finishing 35th in completion percentage over expected; only Zach Wilson and Taysom Hill had a lower CPOE. Mayfield is coming off a down season himself, finishing 30th in CPOE, but he managed to stay in the middle of the pack in efficiency, ranking 22nd in EPA per play. Mayfield, who struggled with injuries throughout all of 2021, is hoping to recapture his 2020 form when he finished ninth in EPA per play. Having Mayfield under center should be a boost to the offense overall and could be particularly good for D.J. Moore.

NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry reports Nelson Agholor has “consistently been one of the Patriots’ top-three wideouts” in training camp. There has been chatter from more than one member of the Patriots media that Agholor could be something of an odd-man-out of the Pats’ crowded receiver group, but Agholor seems to have stabilized his standing with a strong summer. Of course, we still would not expect Agholor to be a fantasy factor in a corps that includes DeVante Parker, Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne and second-rounder Tyquan Thornton.

Panthers vs. Patriots Prediction:
This is a lot of points to lay with a Patriots team that is in major transition with its offense Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston writes that Kendrick Bourne has been his “biggest disappointment” of Patriots camp after he was bounced from a pair of practices this week, once for fighting and the other for “not being ready to go.” Mac Jones is entering his second full season after he helped lead the Pats to the playoffs as a rookie a year ago, but now he’s learning a new system behind a shaky offensive line and a revolving door at receiver. It’s just not a good recipe. Meanwhile, Matt Rhule is attempting to save his job after entering the offseason on the hot seat. The Panthers got off to a good start last week with a win and I see them at least hanging again tonight.
