SAN DIEGO, CA (The Spread) – Fresh off a loss, will the New England Patriots come out motivated, or wounded, against the playoff-hungry San Diego Chargers tonight?

View Current NFL Odds

The Patriots are coming off a 26-21 loss at Green Bay last Sunday. The loss snapped a 7-game winning streak for New England to drop it to 9-3 on the season. The Pats still have a two-game lead in the AFC East and are 7-5 against the spread. The Patriots have covered the spread in four of their last five games as well and have surprising been underdogs in five of their last 8 games. They are just 2-3 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.

San Diego is coming off the biggest win of its season, 34-33 at Baltimore last week. The Chargers scored the game-winning touchdowns in the closing seconds to earn their third straight win and improve to 8-4 on the season. They are 1 game behind Denver in the AFC West and come into tonight’s game 6-6 against the spread. The Chargers are just 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 and 2-2 ATS in their last 4 as an underdog. The only time the Chargers have been an underdog at home was when they beat the Seahawks in Week 2, 30-21.

Oddsmakers expect the Patriots to bounce back tonight, as oddsmakers from Bovada.lv have given New England odds of -3.5 points at San Diego for tonight’s 8:30PM ET kickoff on NBC. The over/under total for the game has been set at 51 points (View Matchup). The Patriots have won five of their last six against New England, covering the spread in four of the five victories.

This game likely could come down to passing defense, as Tom Brady and Philip Rivers are the strong points of each offense. When it comes to a secondary, San Diego is statistically better, allowing just 221.6 yards per game through the air. New England comes into this contest allowing 250.9 passing yards per game. Rivers has thrown for 3,218 yards and 25 touchdowns on the season while Brady has 3,243 yards with 28 scores.
