Steelers 2012 Season Odds
PITTSBURGH, PA (The Spread) – With a shaky offensive line and an aging defense, are the Pittsburgh Steelers still the team to beat in the AFC North?
According to oddsmakers the Steelers are 14/1 to win the 2013 Super Bowl and 6/1 to win the 2013 AFC Championship Game. They’re also +110 on the money line to win the AFC North (which makes them the favorites, as the Baltimore Ravens are +150), and have an over/under of 10 for number of wins this season.
As usual, the Steelers were quiet this offseason. This is a team that rarely spends money in free agency, instead choosing to build through the draft and concentrating on re-signing their own players. They did bring back receiver Jerricho Cotchery, but as of this date restricted wideout Mike Wallace remains a holdout. Pittsburgh also lost cornerback William Gay to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency.
The Steelers invested two draft picks in their offensive line this April but unfortunately David DeCastro could miss the entire season due to a knee injury. Mike Adams, the team’s second round pick, has also battled a knee injury and is viewed as a long-term project while third-rounder Sean Spence could be part of Pittsburgh’s youth movement on defense. Washington defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu was the Steelers’ fourth-round pick this year.
Thanks to Ben Roethlisberger and the system in place under defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, the Steelers will compete in 2012. But it’ll be interesting to see if the injury to running back Rashard Mendenhall and the contract situation of Wallace will eventually derail the Steelers. The offensive line continues to be a massive question mark as well and if the younger players on defense can’t start to raise the level of their play, the Steelers could start to unravel quickly.
