San Diego is coming off a 4-12 record in 2016, with nine losses coming by single digits. The team spent of 2015 in conversations about relocation, but ultimately stayed in San Diego for at least this season. A move to LA is still possible. This year’s team returns head coach Mike McCoy, who enters his fourth season with the Chargers. He went 9-7 in his first two seasons before having a setback last year.
Bet on 2016 San Diego Chargers Odds
San Diego had plenty of challenges last season. The offense struggled due to the loss of top receiver Keenan Allen after eight games. He had 67 receptions for 725 yards and four scores in his half season of work. The team also spent significant time without Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd throughout the year. San Diego hoped for an improved running game in 2015, but rookie Melvin Gordon struggled to ever get going. He rushed for 641 yards last season, but didn’t have a touchdown and fumbled five times. San Diego will need him to be much better this season. Philip Rivers still threw for 4,792 yards and 29 touchdowns last year, but San Diego was far too one dimensional to compete week-in and week-out. One new weapon for Rivers is Hunter Henry, a tight end out of Arkansas.
Defensively, San Diego hopes to see an improved pass rush from last year by taking Joey Bosa third overall in the NFL Draft. San Diego had just 32 sacks as a team last season, led by 10.5 from Melvin Ingram. Ingram really flourished last year, but he was the only real impact player the Chargers had up front. The Chargers will be challenged to replace safety Eric Weddle, who signed with the Ravens in the offseason. San Diego needs to improve their turnover ability. The Chargers had only 11 interceptions and forced just 13 fumbles in 2015.

San Diego is in a division that is highly competitive. The Broncos are the defending champs while the Chiefs were a playoff team. Oakland showed a lot of improvement in 2015 and the Raiders could be a playoff dark horse this year. There isn’t a lot to love about the Chargers, but perhaps getting Allen healthy and adding in Henry will take the Chargers back to being a prolific offense. If Gordon and the O-line can step up, they certainly could put up points. However, can they keep teams off the scoreboard? If Bosa can be a stud pass rusher as a rookie, that would do a lot to help. Still, don’t look for the Chargers to make a big jump in wins this season. They aren’t likely to get tremendous support at home and just don’t have a lot of “wow” factor on paper.
