49ers Season Win Total Prediction
Are the new-look San Francisco 49ers destined to fall under the season win total that was released by oddsmakers?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the over/under for number of wins that the 49ers will produce in 2016 has been set at 5.5. Both the over and under carry odds of -115, so a winning wager on either the over or the under will net bettors $100.00 for every $115.00 that is wagered.

A Look Back
The 49ers hired Jim Tomsula to replace Jim Harbaugh last offseason and Tomsula’s one season proved to be a disaster. Tomsula was overmatched from the start, but the team’s 5-11 season wasn’t solely his fault. Chris Borland, Patrick Willis, Justin Smith and Anthony Davis all retired before the season, leaving the Niners woefully thin on defense. They did beat the Vikings 20-3 in their season opener but rattled off four-straight loss before beating the Ravens 25-20. Their other victories came against the Falcons, Bears and Rams, the final two victories came in overtime.
A Look Ahead
Out is Tomsula, in is former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The one-time Oregon coach will bring his up-tempo offense to Santa Clara but it’s unclear as of this writing who Kelly will choose to start under center. Blaine Gabbert is the incumbent, but Colin Kaepernick was retained after the team flirted with trading him in the offseason. One year after drafting Arik Armstead, the Niners invested another first-round pick on their defensive line when they took Armstead’s former teammate at Oregon, DeForest Buckner. San Francisco also selected Josh Garnett in the first round to beef up their offensive line.

2016 Outlook
Despite his shortcomings in Philadelphia, Kelly won’t be overmatched for the position like Tomsula was a year ago. Plus, the Niners haven’t endured the same turmoil that they did a year ago when Borland, Willis and Davis surprised the masses by retiring.
But neither means that the team will be improved on the field in 2016. If Kaepernick can restore his confidence and beat out Gabbert for the starting quarterback job, he might have the potential to thrive under Kelly. Then again, Kelly wants his quarterbacks to be accurate above all else, and Kaepernick is a career 59.9% passer. It’s likely that Gabbert wins the job and the Niners rely on Carlos Hyde and their running game to win games in 2016.
Trent Baalke has invested four of his last five picks on the defensive side of the ball so at some point, the Niners defense shouldn’t be down-and-out for too long. But the bottom line is that this roster is still devoid of depth and one or two injuries to key players could derail Kelly’s first year by the Bay. Five wins is probably this team’s celing for 2016.
