Super Bowl 52: Are Public Bettors Still Backing Eagles over Pats? 2/4/18

Public Bettors Still Backing Eagles

Are public bettors still backing the underdog Eagles over the Patriots in Super Bowl 52? Here’s the latest.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Eagles are a 4.5-point underdog to beat the Patriots in Super Bowl 52, which is tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET. Philadelphia opened as high as a 6-point underdog at many online sportsbooks but the line was driven down as low as 4 on Friday before climbing back up slightly.

Bet Patriots vs. Eagles Super Bowl LII

As of Sunday morning, 52% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Eagles although this number has dropped throughout the week. On Wednesday of this week, for example, Philadelphia was receiving over 55% of the betting tickets. At one point last week, the Eagles were receiving over 60% of the betting tickets. As it turns out, more Patriots bettors are showing up the closer we draw to kickoff.

Meanwhile, the money wagered online is on New England. Of the money wagered at online sportsbooks for Super Bowl 52, 55% is on the Patriots to cover the point spread. The Eagles are still drawing more action on the money line (63%), although that has more to do with the payout (+170) than anything.

Speaking of which, Ben Fawkes of ESPN’s “Chalk” tweeted on Monday night that the MGM Mirage in Las Vegas took a multimillion dollar bet on the Eagles to win outright. William Hill also took a $1 million wager on Philly moneyline while the Wynn took a “high six figures” bet on the Eagles moneyline. CG Technology also took a 700K wager on the Eagles to win and South Point took a 500K wager on Philly money line according to Fawkes.

According to Fawkes’ cohort at ESPN.com, David Purdum, the same unnamed bettor who took Las Vegas for millions on the World Series bet on the underdog Eagles for big bucks. That was the $1 million wager at William Hill U.S. The wager would reportedly net $1.65 million if the Eagles were to pull off the upset.

Underdogs have won six of the last 10 Super Bowls and have covered in nine of the last 10 games. Nine underdogs have already covered games this postseason, which is the most in a single postseason in the Super Bowl era. No matter which team covers the spread in Super Bowl 52, this will be the best ATS percentage by underdogs in a single NFL postseason in that span.
