Recent Super Bowl Coin Toss History
Believe it or not, one of the most popular prop bets on the Super Bowl is the coin toss. Even though it’s a 50-50 proposition, here are some interesting trends for you to consider.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Patriots are now 4.5-point favorites to beat the Eagles, who opened as 6-point underdogs. The total, meanwhile, hit the board at 47.5 and is now up to 48 or even 48.5 at some books.
As of Friday morning, 53% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Eagles. That said, 54% of the money wagered at online sportsbooks is on the Patriots. Meanwhile, 59% of the betting tickets are on the over.
Bet Patriots vs. Eagles Super Bowl LII
So is there an edge when it comes to betting the coin toss? Well, no. It’s always going to be a 50-50 wager but let’s start with the odds first. Heads has odds of 50/51 and tails has odds of 50/51. The Eagles are 20/21 to win the coin toss and the Patriots have those same 20/21 odds.
That said, the Falcons won the coin toss last year in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots called heads and the coin came up tails. With Atlanta winning last year, NFC teams have now won 18 of the last 20 coin tosses in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, five of the last nine Super Bowl coin tosses have landed on heads.
Thus, while there isn’t a value when it comes to the coin toss odds, the NFC has been a much better bet to win the toss over the past 20 years. Heads has also been a better bet, although again, last year George H.W. Bush produced a “tails” flip.
Our prediction? Take the Eagles 20/21 to win the coin toss in Super Bowl LII.
