Seahawks sign Wilson to new deal
The Seattle Seahawks locked up their franchise quarterback to a new deal this week. Has that improved their chances to win Super Bowl LIV?
According to the latest oddsmakers, the Seahawks are currently listed with 40/1 odds to win the Super Bowl next season. The Patriots remain the favorite with 6/1 odds while the Chiefs and Rams are next at 8/1.
Russell Wilson and the Seahawks agreed to a new four-year, $140 million contract extension just prior to his self-imposed deadline on Monday at midnight. The new deal makes Wilson currently the highest-paid player in all of the NFL.
The durable quarterback has not missed a game for the Seahawks since being drafted in 2012. He has played in all 16 games in each of his seven seasons with the franchise. He has thrown for a total of 25,624 yards with 196 touchdowns and 63 interceptions while completing 64.2 percent of his passes. He also has rushed for 3,651 yards and 16 touchdowns over his career.
Last season, Wilson threw for 3,448 yards and 35 touchdowns. The touchdowns were a career-high while the passing yards were the third-lowest of his career. Pass protection has been an issue for Seattle over the year. Wilson was sacked a career-high 51 times last season.
The Seahawks went 10-6 last season, making the playoffs before losing to the Cowboys in the opening round, 24-22. Seattle has put up a record of 75-36-1 in the regular season under Wilson and an 8-5 playoff record that includes a Super Bowl championship in 2013 and NFC championship in 2014.
With Wilson under center, Seattle hasn’t had a losing season and they have had 10 wins or more in six of his seven seasons. The Seahawks are usually a pretty sound team on both sides of the ball and they certainly have good value at 40/1 given their consistency and QB play.
