Alright, let’s get down to it. The Cincinnati Bengals have come out of nowhere to stun the football world as Joe Burrow continues to flex as one of the premier passers in the league today. It is hard to believe that the Bengals were 4-11 last season but that poor record allowed them the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and they hit a home run when they chose Joe Burrow’s LSU pass and catch buddy, Ja’Marr Chase, with the selection.
The Bengals have a silky-smooth operator under center in Joe Cool and he has plenty of weapons to get the job done. Besides Chase, the Cats have Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, C.J. Uzomah, and running back Joe Mixon who had 42 receptions and three receiving touchdowns out of the backfield this season. It’s a potent offense that can torture an average defense.
Unfortunately, Cincinnati is not equipped with a stellar offensive line and that was clear when the Tennessee Titans sacked Joe Burrow a staggering nine times in their playoff tilt. The Bengals won that defensive battle, 19-16, but Burrow, despite putting up 348 yards, was held without a touchdown pass.
Rams Ready to Rumble
Los Angeles believed they needed a top-notch quarterback to get them to the promised land this season and swung a deal to acquire the Lions’ Matthew Stafford in exchange for their starting QB, Jared Goff, as well as two first-round picks and a third-round pick.
Goff wasn’t bad, he just wasn’t good enough to put the Rams over the top and it appears the LA brass was right because here they are back in the Super Bowl after a three-year hiatus. The Rams lost to the New England Patriots, 13-3, in Super Bowl 53 back in 2019.
The Rams have a lethal offense of their own, featuring Stafford and his dynamic duo of receivers, Cooper Kupp, and the rejuvenated Odell Beckham Jr. who has had a career renaissance in LA. Tyler Higbee is a decent tight end and the Rams were happy to see running back Cam Akers returning from the IR to bolster their rushing attack along with Sony Michel.
The Verdict
The NFL odds at all of the best online sportsbooks are revealing the Rams as a solid 4-point favorite. We did see this line drift up to 4 ½ earlier in the week but since that time the action on the Bengals has brought this line down.
Both offenses are equipped to do serious damage, but the defenses are a bit different. The Bengals’ D is well-equipped against the run, ranked fifth at the end of the regular season, allowing 102.5 yards per game. However, their pass defense is ranked 26th, surrendering 248.4 yards per contest.
The Rams’ defensive line features All-World edge rusher Aaron Donald and his terrifying friend, Von Miller. This is what tilts the balance of power in LA’s favor and should allow them to prevail as Joe Burrow can’t pass if he is on his back. LA also has the home-field advantage, as the venue is SoFi Stadium, their home turf. Lay the lumber and back the Rams.
