According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Packers are currently 3-point favorites over the Steelers, while the Super Bowl XLV over/under total is sitting at 44.5 at some books and 45 at others.
The early line movement suggests that the books received big money on Green Bay. The Packers opened as 2-point favorites (or even 1.5-point favorites at some books) at most books but immediately climbed to 2.5. Then the oddsmakers started adjusting the money line in order to create more even action. The Packers stayed at -2.5, but the juice went to -120. Then, when they climbed to -3, the money line went to +100 last Saturday.
But while all the early money was coming in on Green Bay, the odds shifted to Pittsburgh. Plenty of bettors are now backing the Steelers, but what’s interesting is that they’re not taking the three points and laying the -120 juice. They’re taking the Steelers to win outright at +115 or +120 depending on what book bettors use. Thanks to their experience in recent Super Bowls, Pittsburgh has a ton of backers that are picking them to win outright and thus, are attempting to cash in on the money line.
As for the total, oddsmakers opened the over/under at 46 but immediately booked sharp action on the under, which caused the total to drop to 45.5 and then 45. It got as low as 44 at some books, but public backers are starting to push the total back up. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the total go all the way back to 46 once the tourist start placing their wagers in Vegas.
With the amount of offensive firepower that the Packers have thanks to Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver, as well as the offensive success the Steelers have had lately with Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall and Mike Wallace, it’s no wonder why people would think this could wind up being a shootout. After all, the public wants to see an exciting, high-scoring Super Bowl and they’ll bet accordingly.
