ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime believes RB Dameon Pierce could take over the team’s starting job by the first month of the regular season. Pierce has looked spectacular in training camp and in the team’s first preseason game. He averaged 9.8 yards per carry on his five totes in the preseason opener, displaying elusiveness and explosion he showed in spurts during his career at Florida. The rookie could give Houston coaches no choice but to use him as a workhorse this year, though veterans Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead lurk if Pierce stumbles with pass protection or another aspect of the game that often befuddles rookie running backs. Pierce is a screaming draft target for those who fade early-round running backs.

Matthew Stafford told NBC Sports’ Peter King his off days are all about load management. Stafford told King he practiced every day last year and had some discomfort, so he wanted to get some rest during training camp. King noted Stafford threw around 75 passes in the practice he watched and “the zip on the ball was very good.” While at one point it looked like a concern, Stafford’s elbow injury is starting to seem like a non-factor. That is good news for Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson, and the rest of the offense.

Texans at Rams Prediction:
The fact that Houston is favored tells you all you need to know about how much oddsmakers believe this game matters to L.A. While the Rams did have a good showing in their first preseason game of the season – a 29-22 victory over in-stadium rival, the Chargers – they’re still handling Stafford’s elbow injury with great caution and this is a team that is gearing up for another Super Bowl run. There’s no reason to force the issue by putting starters in harm’s way and that’s why I think the Texans – who need every rep imaginable as they prepare for what will likely be another long season – eventually pull it a victory tonight at SoFi Stadium.
