Newton ready for a bounce-back
Coming off their first loss of the season are Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers set to light up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today?
According to oddsmakers at RealBets, Carolina is the favorite in today’s game, as the Panthers are getting odds of -10.5 points against the Buccaneers. The over/under total for the game has been set at 46 points. These two meet today at 4:25PM ET on FOX.
Despite being 14-1, the Panthers (10-5 ATS) have a lot at stake in this game, as they need a win to lock up the top seed in the NFC. They face the Bucs (6-9, 7-8 ATS) who don’t really have anything at stake, but would probably like to spoil Carolina’s home-field plans. Coming off last week’s loss, Newton will likely be eager to get back to his celebrating ways and oddsmakers expect big things from him today, as his over/under for passing yards is set at 230.5 and his over/under for rushing yards is at 43.5.
Newton is on the short-list of MVP candidates this season as he has thrown for 3,544 yards with 33 touchdowns while also rushing for 626 yards and eight scores while leading the Panthers to the top record in the NFL thus far. Today Newton is up against a Tampa defense that actually ranks 9th in the NFL in fewest yards allowed at just 338.7 per game. When these two met back on Oct. 4 in Tampa, the Panthers won 37-23, but Newton was held to 124 passing yards on 11 of 22 passing. He also added 51 rushing yards on 12 carries. The 124 yards were the fewest Newton has had this season. He has since had seven games with at least 231 passing yards, including his last four home games. Newton has also run for at least 43 yards in seven games this year and with Carolina without Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy Whittaker in the backfield due to injuries, Newton could be the primary runner in this game.
