Will Cam break McNair’s rushing record?
Will Cam Newton break the late Steve McNair’s Super Bowl record for most rushing yards by a quarterback?
McNair set the record in Super Bowl XXXIV when he rushed for 64 yards as a member of the Titans, who lost to the Rams in 2000. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Newton’s odds of breaking McNair’s record are +275. The odds that he won’t break it are -450.
Here’s why Newton is unlikely to break McNair’s rushing record. For starters, Bovada.lv has set the over/under at 40.5 for Newton’s rushing yards for the game. That’s a clear indication of how many yards oddsmakers believe Newton will finish around for the game. That doesn’t mean Newton won’t go over that number, but will he go over that number by 24.5 yards in order to break McNair’s record?
The other reason Newton is unlikely to eclipse McNair’s record is because he averaged roughly 41.0 yards rushing in 18 games this season. He went over 41 in only half of those 18 games this season. So while he could break off a long run and set himself up to break McNair’s record, the numbers indicate that he’ll fall short of the mark.
