EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -The New York Giants put defensive lineman William Joseph on injured reserve Tuesday, another setback for the former top draft pick whose career has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency.
Joseph, who has a back injury, has not done much since the Giants made him their first-round pick in 2003. To replace him, the team signed defensive tackle Russell Davis, a nine-year veteran who has played for Chicago, Arizona and Seattle.
Davis, 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, was released by the Seahawks last week. He has played in 104 games with 83 starts during his career and recorded 348 tackles (212 solo), 11 1/2 sacks, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Giants also reworked their practice squad on Tuesday, adding running back Quentin Smith and tight end Jerome Collins and releasing guard Matt Lentz and tight end Jake Nordin.
Collins played three games with the St. Louis Rams in 2005 and spent time on the Cowboys’ practice squad last season before the Indianapolis Colts signed him to their active roster. Collins, though, did not appear in a game for the Colts before going on injured reserve with an Achilles’ tendon injury.
Smith, a rookie free agent from Rice, had been waived by New England on Sept. 2. He had a 1-yard scoring run in New England’s preseason win over the Giants on Aug. 30.
