JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -Veteran John Carney signed a one-year contract with Jacksonville on Tuesday, giving the Jaguars a replacement for injured placekicker Josh Scobee.
The 43-year-old Carney was one of five kickers who worked out for the Jaguars earlier in the day. He got a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $820,000 with no signing bonus.
Scobee strained his right quadriceps muscle during pregame warmups Sunday and probably won’t play against Atlanta.
“It’s unlikely we’ll have him,” coach Jack Del Rio said.
The Jaguars were still assessing how long Scobee would be sidelined, and Del Rio said it was possible he could end up on injured reserve.
But Del Rio also was hopeful Scobee could return soon. Until then, Carney will handle field goals, extra points and kickoffs.
Carney spent the last six seasons in New Orleans and ranks seventh on the NFL’s all-time scoring list. He made 23 of 25 field goal attempts in 2006. He was granted his release in April after the Saints traded for Olindo Mare.
Carney also played in Tampa Bay (1988) and 11 seasons in San Diego (1990-2000). Signing with Jacksonville, though, brings him back to the site of his most infamous miss.
The Saints used several laterals to score a touchdown on the final play against Jacksonville on Dec. 21, 2003, and pulled within an extra point of tying the game at 20. But Carney missed it wide right, leaving the Saints on the losing end and eliminating them from playoff contention.
To make room for Carney on the roster, the Jaguars released guard Tutan Reyes.
