NEW YORK (AP) New York Jets quarterback Bryce Petty has a bruised right shoulder, and coach Todd Bowles says an MRI exam revealed no structural damage.
During a conference call Friday, Bowles says it is too early to determine whether the second-year quarterback will be placed on injured reserve. The coach adds, however, that Petty will not be put on IR before the team makes its final cuts to get down to the maximum 53 players by 4 p.m. EDT Saturday.
Bowles says they will monitor Petty over the next few days before making a determination.
With Petty’s status uncertain, Bowles says it’s ”fair to say” Geno Smith has solidified the No. 2 job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The Jets have entertained the idea of keeping four quarterbacks, and Bowles says they would continue to consider that when the coaching staff meets Friday night.
