HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -The New York Jets placed wide receiver Chansi Stuckey on injured reserve Wednesday, ending the rookie’s season because of a foot injury.
The Jets also signed safety Abram Elam and added him to the active roster, and signed offensive lineman Jason Capizzi to the practice squad. The team released safety Ray Ventrone from the practice squad.
Stuckey, the team’s seventh-round draft pick in April, injured his right foot last week and was inactive for the season opener against the New England Patriots. Coach Eric Mangini said only that it was the same foot he broke in his senior year of college, but a different injury.
“It was something that came up last week that when we tested it, it just wasn’t going to get any better, so we put him on IR,” Mangini said.
Stuckey’s agent, Terry Watson, confirmed that the injury was to the same foot, but preferred to not comment on the specifics out of respect to the team.
“Chansi is down somewhat, given his momentum he was continuing to build in his first year,” Watson told The Associated Press. “He is resilient, though, and will be back next year to hopefully help his team long term.”
The speedy Stuckey, sixth in Clemson history with 141 receptions and eighth with 1,760 yards receiving, was expected to add depth at receiver and see time as a returner for the Jets. He led the team with 11 catches, tied for second-most in the AFC, for 76 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.
Stuckey was the first Tigers player since 1940 to score a touchdown by pass, rush, punt return and reception, but was dogged by injuries throughout his career. He had a nagging left ankle injury as a sophomore, a concussion as a junior, and a thumb injury and broken right foot that sidelined him for three games as a senior.
