Can the Columbus Blue Jackets finally end their seven-year playoff drought in 2008? Oddsmakers have established the Blue Jackets’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 65/1.
Second-year general manager Scott Howson spent most of his time this offseason overhauling a roster of a club that as previously mentioned, has not made the postseason in seven years. Howson parted ways with former first round draft picks Nikolai Zherdev, Gron Hainsey and Gilbert Brule, and then went out and signed free agents R.J. Umberger and Kristian Huselius.
Along with their free agent signings, the club also hopes that prospects Derick Brassard, Jakub Voracek and Nikita Filatov develop quicker rather than later. The 19-year old Voracek is a strong skater who loves to compete and could be an excellent player in the near future.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Jackets’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 60/1. Bodog has Columbus at 65/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Blue Jackets a 100/1 shot.
Solid coaching and goaltending shouldn’t be a problem this year for the Jackets, but Ken Hitchock has to be wondering where his offense is going to come from. Columbus has the weakest offense in the Central Division conference and unless their young prospects surprise right away, this team could be in for a long year. Still, All-Star Rick Nash is back and is coming off a 38-goal season, and if they can gel quick, the Jackets could surprise this year.
