Tom Wilson received a $5,000 fine for roughing Pavel Buchnevich during Monday’s game. Wilson appeared to punch Buchnevich in the head while Buchnevich was already down on the ice. On top of that, when Artemi Panarin attempted to rise to the defense of his teammate, Wilson knocked Panarin to the ice twice during the ensuing fight until the referees and Rangers pulled Wilson off Panarin. Panarin left the game and reportedly might miss what’s left of the season due to the injury. Wilson is signed to a six-year, $31 million contract. He’ll be eligible to play when the Capitals face the Rangers again on Wednesday.

The New York Rangers released a statement on Tuesday to voice their displeasure with the lack of a suspension to Washington’s Tom Wilson. “The New York Rangers are extremely disappointed that Capitals forward Tom Wilson was not suspended for his horrifying act of violence last night at Madison Square Garden. Wilson is a repeat offender with a long history of these type of acts and we find it shocking that the NHL and their Department of Player Safety failed to take the appropriate action and suspend him indefinitely. Wilson’s dangerous and reckless actions caused an injury to Artemi Panarin that will prevent him from playing again this season. We view this as a dereliction of duty by NHL head of player safety, George Parros, and believe he is unfit to continue in his current role.” Players on the Rangers as well as members of the coaching staff echoed those remarks when they spoke about incident on Tuesday. Wilson received a $5,000 fine for roughing on Pavel Buchnevich, but he didn’t face further supplemental discipline despite injuring Panarin. The Rangers will play against the Capitals again on Wednesday night.
