Connor Hellebuyck stopped 40 of the 45 shots he faced in Monday’s 6-5 road win against the Edmonton Oilers. The Jets fired out to a 4-1 lead early in the second period, and perhaps Hellebuyck started to get a little bit comfortable. The Oilers stormed back hard, outscoring the Jets 4-1 in a 20:24 span from early in the second period to early in the third, tying the game at 5-5. Blake Wheeler got his goalie into the win column, burying a goal at 6:22 of the third. It wasn’t pretty, but Hellebuyck improved to 7-4-1 with a 2.58 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in his 12 starts. The Jets and Oilers will run it back Wednesday night on NBCSN at 10 p.m. ET.
Edmonton Oilers DFS Spin
Mike Smith allowed four goals on 11 shots in Monday’s 6-5 home loss against the Winnipeg Jets. Smith and the Oilers fell behind 4-1 early in the second period, and his night was over early when Nikolaj Ehlers scored just 2:31 into the second. Mikko Koskinen replaced Smith in between the pipes, and the move worked. The Oilers fired off four of the next five goals to tie the game 5-5 early in the third period. Koskinen became the goaltender of record, and he took the loss when Blake Wheeler bagged the winner at 6:22 of the third to make it 6-5. Smith is likely back to a reserve role Wednesday night in the rematch against the Jets.
Jets vs. Oilers Prediction
The Jets are 9-3 in their last 12 games against the Oilers and 5-1 in their last six games in Edmonton. They’re also 6-2 in their last eight games playing on one day of rest and 36-17 in their last 53 games when their opponent allowed five goals or more in its previous contest. On the other side, the Oilers are 3-10 in their last 13 games after scoring five goals or more in their previous game and are just 1-10 in their last 11 games played on Wednesday.
