Kings defeat Devils for first Cup
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Move over, Lakers and Dodgers. Step aside, Trojans and Bruins. For now, hockey is King for LA fans.
Los Angeles is getting its first chance to celebrate a Stanley Cup as people decked in black and purple party inside Staples Center and across the city following the Kings’ 6-1 victory Monday over the New Jersey Devils in Game 6 to clinch the series.
Police have expressed hopes that if the Kings clinched the Cup that LA fans would celebrate peacefully, and are looking to avoid the vandalism and violence that has followed some Lakers’ titles.
Cmdr. Andrew Smith says there are scores of officers on bikes and motorcycles outside Staples Center, and many undercover officers amid the crowd to put a quick stop to troublemakers.
Police went on a citywide tactical alert shortly before the game ended.
