Maple Leafs Season Odds
The Toronto Maple Leafs hope new head coach Ron Wilson can help lead them to the promise land in 2008. Oddsmakers have established the Canadiens’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 10/1.
Wilson’s biggest challenge this season will be to improve on the Leafs’ brutal defense, which ranked 27th in the league last year. They also finished 29th in penalty killing, which means veterans Tomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina must step up more to give stopper Vesa Toskala a fighting chance in net.
Toronto must find a way to replace Mats Sundin, who bolted via free agency in the offseason. Nik Antropov, Alex Steen and Niklas Hagman will be counted on to produce the offense for the Leafs this season, but none of them scored more than 30 goals last season.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Leafs’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 75/1. Bodog has Toronto at 80/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Leafs an 100/1 shot.
Oddsmakers have also listed Toronto as a 50/1 favorite to win the Eastern Conference this season.
The odds are stacked against the Maple Leafs making a Stanley Cup run this season, but that doesn’t mean they’re not a decent value bet. Wilson is an upgrade over former head coach Paul Maurice and if the defense can step up, the offense isn’t a major weakness. But this club must improve on their league-worst goals against average at home if they’re going to do anything this year.
